Here Comes the Sun

Today has been a "good day" at the hospital. John was upbeat and kept those around him smiling. He had an x-ray of his chest, the results of which we'll receive tomorrow. He walked to the x-ray lab on his own doing his best imitation of a penguin.

The highlight of John's day was getting iTunes on his computer. He used his $25 iTunes gift card to download some new music. His current favorite is the Beatles, especially the songs "Help", "Come Together" and "Here Comes the Sun". He and his mom spent lots of time rocking out with their extra large head phones, courtesy of Uncle Geoff.

John also managed to whip his Grandma and Aunt Kelly in Sponge Bob memory game. No surprise there!

Our primary job over the last couple days has been to undergo training on how to administer John's medication and care for him when he comes home. I did my first blood draw today using his Broviac line. When I was done, John told me he was impressed.

Tomorrow John will undergo his next round of chemotherapy. We will continue to keep you updated on his progress...

Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
and I say it's all right

    John,
We haven't met yet but I'm another one of your Aunt Melissa and Uncle Brian's friends from college, which unfortunately means I am a Stanford fan, but i LOVE adorable Cal fans like you! You'd be happy to know that my niece just started at Cal and she has been filling our house with Cal gear for my two-year old and 3-month old, including an Osky bear for our stuffed animal collection.

Here's a little poem I hope will make you smile...

You are the coolest little man
And you are a Super Fam
Of the Cal Bears who rule the school
And by the way, red pee is cool!

Your Beatles tunes will keep you strong
And you'll be home before too long
You are a star and super brave
And very soon you'll surf that wave!

We're sending lots of hugs with care
And just for you, I'll say "Go Bears!"

Lots and lots of love to you and your Mommy, Daddy, Jimmy and Caroline!!! Love, Sara, Mike, Tyler and Piper

Hi Johnny - I heard you and I are on the same basketball team! From last year's lay-up team, we have Matt, Bennett and Sean and me. There are other good players too. Hope you can come out soon. Even if you're still not feeling great enough to play, just knowing you're on our team will give us a turbo boost. My dad said if our opponents just think you might play against them, that will scare them to death! You're a legend! Take care, Nicholas

  9. Hi Johnny,

You don't know me but I am a friend of your moms from OBA. I just wanted to let you know that your spirit is inspiring. My family and I read your blog everyday and are amazed at your strength and courage.

I like your choice in Music. The Beatles are great.

I hope Cal beats USC tonight. I'm sure you will be watching.

By the way, I am 44 years old and my family and friends still call me Johnny! It's a great name!

    Take Care,

  10. Mollie and Mike,
There's not an hour that goes by that we don't think of you. Today as we woke up early to get kids off to their various sports we spoke of John who we know will need to lay low for awhile. We know that is hard, but also know he will soon be back to his old self, and sports, and all the other things he loves, which apparently includes the Beatles. We love the Beatles too John! And all other types of music like your Daddy! Thinking of you. Carolyn and Mike Gwynn

Hi Johnny, we needed you at soccer today... but I told them we are saving all our energy for the CAL game... CAL really needs a win today. I can't wait to come see you. Those headphones look cool! What are you going to be for Halloween? Do you have homework in the hospital...you're lucky if you don't.
    I love you... Joe

Hey, Johnny--I'm a friend of your dad's from work. (At least he SAYS he "works" there. I'm suspect. )

Guess what? My daughter is applying to Cal so you'll have a new fan next year!

I just got back from Costa Rica--you would love it. The waves are HUGE! Lots of guys down there with surfboards--I watched from the beach! While I was in Costa Rica I spent lots of time meditating (tell your dad to stop laughing) and you were in my thoughts. I'll keep thinking about you and sending you lots of strength.

Check out Creedence Clearwater Revival and Pearl Jam, too--the Beatles were huge inspirations to both these bands.

    Feel great today, buddy!

    Olivia

Hi John, it's me again, Lisa Berger. Me and my family thought of all of the Ricksens last night as we watched the football game. Now the game isn't worth really thinking about at this point, but I just wanted you to know that for a few hours last night we were all thinking about you and sending good vibes towards California! I hope your good days continue! Love, Lisa Berger

  16. Hi John,
The Fenns are thinking about you - you are so strong and brave! Remember when you were at our house swimming this summer and you and Ryan played "find Mr. Bill". Ryan picked out your own Mr. Bill and we dropped it off at your house. Caroline started the game and hid him for you. When you get home you'll have to find him:) Hang in there!
    Much love,

    Hey John,
We were at Children's on Friday for an appointment for my son, Reid (not sure if you remember that you played bb on his team once during lay-ups...you were a great add to the team that day)! We were thinking about you when we were at the hospital...wondered which window was your room. Wonder what floor you are on? We 'smiled' up to the building, hoping to send you a hello!
Also, we saw at the hospital, a flyer that there is a 'shoe sale' this week in the lobby. We thought maybe your mom might want to do a little shopping. We know she loves shoes, and thought how 'convenient' it is that they are bringing the shopping to her!
Thinking about you and your family all the time.
